NOWHERE PEOPLE: STATELESSNESS IN THE U.S.

FOR THOSE WITH NO NATIONALITY, NO IDENTIFICATION AND NO RIGHTS

This is a study of a person who is in limbo, stuck in a circle of invisibility, with no rights, because she does not exist on paper or in systems, just in REAL LIFE.
She was dragged across the US/Mexico border as a toddler or young child, with a group of adults she did not know. No birth certificate.  No family.
She was forced to work in agriculture as a child, never allowed to go to school.  She was given a name and DOB.  It is unknown if they are correct but, they do not exist in any system.
Over 20 years later, she has four children, lives in poverty and fear, and is the victim of numerous crimes, namely Domestic Violence.
Today, 3/25/17, she is still invisible, unable to work, get a drivers license, medical care, be on a lease, pay for a house, pay for anything. She cannot buy property, open a bank account, get credit or a loan, and this is the least of her worries. She can not study.
With nowhere to be deported to, she could face detention since the few laws that exist authorize the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Attorney General to “provide conditional lawful status to [certain stateless individuals] who [are] otherwise inadmissible or deportable from the United States”.  They authorize, but do not guarantee safety and protection.  And, its all conditional.

What would you do?
